talking about AMD Phenom II 940 as whole, few things have to be pointed out. The first one is that Phenom II is the first quad-cored mainstream AMD processor manufactured by the 45nm technology. The processor is also being fully compatible with older AM2+ motherboards and that when a decent (rather potent actually) AMD 790GX/FX chipset motherboard could be obtained for about 100-140$. Considering the price AMD Phenom II X4 940 is set at 275$ (235$ for the lower 920 model) that makes it very lucrative deal, appropriate for gaming system, while still being better deal than Intel Q9550 / Q6600 based systems. The Phenom II overclocks relatively easy and a frequency of 3.6-3.8GHz with air cooling is to be the least it can do. Bottom line is that AMD are finally on the way that will cut them a sweet share of the gaming fans and maybe very soon with the release of AM3, might turn out that the company has something with a fighting chance in the high end of the processor market.
In the end we do recommend AMD Phenom II 940 to any gamer that already has AMD AM2+ platform and even to gamers that are considering a total upgrade. But if you're in possession of good Intel motherboard and are in need of quad-core processor instead of dual-core one, the trouble of changing the whole platform is definitely not worth it, just get Q6600 or Q9450/9550.
