Page 5 - Testing (round 2), Test rigs

Performance

As for the apparent performance we already mentioned that as far as games like Warcraft III and Quake 3 are concerned it's on the level. We must note also that Windows XP boot time with MSI Wind is quite short, and that while not using a speedy SSD drive but an plain conventional 2,5” one.

Battery

The standard battery is only a 3 cell one, so during testing it held roughly about 2,5 hours. That is more or less a standard time. We really wanted to test the 6 battery too, but alas, we couldn't manage to get our hands on one. With it though the the work time should extend to 5,5-6 with a single charge.

Turbo performance

MSI Wind has the standard MSI overclock button too (turbo performance). In this case though its a combo (Fn+F10), and funny enough unlike with bigger machines here it lowers the processor frequency in order to save power.

Sound

The integrated sound is one of the weakest sides of this product. Good enough to watch a youtube movie, nothing else. It clanks, has no low frequencies and it's quiet too, should you boost it to the max it will only hurt your ears with horrible sound. Thank heavens for earphones say we. That is to be expected from such small speakers though, still they are available so that counts for something. As for the integrated microphone - its on the level.

Webcam

Its there. It works. Rather well too. Turns on/off by Fn+F6 in order to save power. Nothing more to be said.

Comparison configurations

We decided to compare MSI Wind with two other Windows XP based systems. One of them is a mobile computer from an older generation, not too well suited for Vista. The other is MSI Titan 700, Via based barebone system that we have reviewed previously.

The not too Vista friendly laptop

  • DELL Inspiron 6400
  • CPU: Intel T5600 @ 1.83 GHz
  • Ram: 1GB DDR2 533
  • Video: Nvidia GeForce Go 7300
  • HDD: 120 GB SATA
  • ОС: Windows XP Pro SP 2

Now on to see how the Wind dashes out CPU performance.
